Geography and Maps

Although Malawi has no coast as such, Lake Malawi forms a large part of the border with Mozambique and Tanzania. The Malawian parts of the lake make up 20% of the 118,484 km² of the country. For comparison, the area of Scotland is 78,387 km².

The capital city is Lilongwe, though Blantyre tends to be the main centre for commerce.

The climate is described as “sub-tropical”, with the rainy season being November to May. The surface of the lake is 450 m above sea level, and much of the country is at 900 m, with Mount Mulanje reaching over 3000 m.
